East Lyme Beautification Committee, Inc.
The first meeting of 2002 was held on February 28th at the East Lyme Town Hall. President Dan Shea opened the meeting at 7:10 p.m.
The Treasurer’s Report was read by Treasurer Anne Marie Rogers. We have a checking account balance of $3095.35 and Savings balance of $108.75. Total cash available as of 12/31/01 is $3204.10.
Secretary’s minutes were read by myself and accepted.
OLD BUSINESS
Election of Officers will be held at the end of the year to give current
officers time in office.
After such a mild winter our Daffodils are sprouting all over town rather
early. It was suggested that we rope off those planted at McCooks Park prior to
the mowing season.
The purchase of a bench on the yet to be built
Boardwalk in the name of the Beautification Committee has been tabled until a
later date.
Kim Doucette was not able to be at
this meeting. She sent an e-mail asking “What is to keep people from putting up
sandwich board signs in front of their business or home?” Is there a zoning law
for this?
We did not make a donation of $100 to the
Niantic Merchants to help defray the cost of lighting for the holiday season if
they are soliciting this year. A donation was not solicited.
McCooks Park Bathhouse
Niantic Fire Department Substation (helpers needed)
Town Green Gazebo Planters (Lions Club)
Cabbage Garden (Town Hall)
Gladiola Planting
McCooks Park (two gardens)
Methodist Street (garden)
Hope Street (overgrown garden)
More Daffodils??
It was suggested we form teams to deal with upkeep around town. Any volunteers? Joe Mingo will be responsible for the hanging baskets in the Gazebo on the Town Green and the Cabbage Patch at the Town Hall. Loretta and Hugh McIlhenny have the responsibility for upkeep at the Berm on Route 1 entering Flanders.
Sue Kraynak was not able to be at this meeting. She sent an e-mail suggesting a Plant Swap. She also mentioned a Daffodil Festival held in Nantucket annually. There was a segment on Rebecca’s Garden highlighting the event. Each year they hold a Parade to usher in spring and daffodils. She has a tape if anyone is interested in viewing it.
Sue also discussed having a Plant Swap. Early spring is a good time to hold the event when seedlings are mature enough to trade and gardening friends who grow their plants from seed have discovered they invariably have far more than they need. Seed packets are also a good trade. You can take home only as many plants as you bring to the swap. You have to register when you come in so that it can be recorded how many and what plants you are bringing in and someone checks on the way out. Nice way to pick up some pretty exotic plants.
In the past the Beautification Committee has participated in the “Pride in East Lyme Week” held in the spring (April). Members and helpers cleaned up litter/trash throughout town. Adopting the slogan “Don’t be too proud to pick up litter, be proud enough” generated help from all residents. We would like to continue this practice. Volunteers needed. A request for help could go to the High School Key Club and Boy/Girl Scouts in the area.
Dan Shea has asked the Niantic News to include our meetings with those listed under Town Meetings.
We will meet on March 28, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. in the Town Hall.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Guests and new members are always welcome.
Respectfully submitted
Barbara Mingo
