May
Meeting May 3, 2001

East
Lyme Town Beautification Committee
This month’s meeting was
held on May 3, 2001 at the East Lyme Town Hall.
The meeting opened at 7:10 p.m. and was chaired by Sue Pfanner,
President. It was agreed that monthly meetings will be held on the
fourth Thursday each month.
Election of Officers for a one-year term was discussed.
All offices are open and anyone wishing to run for office or nominate
another to run is asked to contact Sue at 739-9365 prior to next month’s
meeting at which time elections will take place.
At present Sue is President, Ann Marie Rogers is Treasurer and Joe Mingo
Liaison to the Town Hall.
Our official name is as listed in this heading and the Association is a 501C
non-profit organization. It is audited annually and recommends the posting of
minutes/agenda for each meeting. It
is a requirement that all volunteers keep track of personal time spent on
various projects. Attached is a copy of a Tracking Chart for your use which
should be turned into the Secretary for recording purposes.
A Boy Scout Troop has cleaned out the island at the corner of
Pattagansett Road and Route 161. We
would like to send a letter of appreciation.
Is anyone able to give us a contact person for the troop?
An arboretum grant has been applied for through the Department of Environmental
Protection, Division of Forestry, through the America the Beautiful Grant
Program. It is a competitive grant
program through which matching funds for urban and community forestry projects
are provided to eligible non-profit organizations based on funding availability
and application quality. These
funds could be used for the McCooks/Boardwalk project currently in the planning
stages. A copy of the entire
application can be viewed upon request.
Two Butterfly Gardens have been planted at McCooks Park.
Sue Kraynak has plans and a description of plants in the gardens.
We will supply hanging baskets for the Memorial Day activities planned at the
Town Green this year and not at the Town Hall.
Plans are being finalized for May 9th at which time the
Flanders School second graders will plant gladiola bulbs at the Town Hall.
A crew is needed for Saturday, May 12th at 9:00 a.m. to help
spread mulch, plant grass and remove rocks around the Methodist
Street/Railroad/Hope Street area. Wheelbarrows,
shovels and rakes are needed.
Aerial photographs of the Niantic Bay were suggested as a fundraiser.
Joe Mingo has several shots which were taken by the National Guard last
summer. Frame Shop owner George Kobic has expressed an interest in
this project.
A “Clean Up East Lyme Day” was suggested.
It has been undertaken previously with very positive results.
Trash bags were provided by the National Guard.
Anyone interested in pursuing this event?
In the future we may want to consider the purchase of some trash receptacles
which are over $500 each.
The next meeting will be held at the Flanders Fish House on June 21 at
7:00 p.m.
Guests and new members are always welcome.
Respectfully submitted
Barbara Mingo
