East Lyme Beautification Committee, Inc.

The June meeting was held at the East Lyme Town Hall and was opened at 7:10 by President Dan Shea.

The Secretary’s Minutes from the informal June meeting were read.

Treasurer’s Report was read.  There is a balance of $4,261.75 in available funds.

OLD BUSINESS

Chris Green, our Eagle Scout has decided to pursue his project at the Fish Ladder on Latimers Brook near Flanders Four Corners in East Lyme.  A crew from the Department of Environmental Protection has already scheduled a clean-up of the area in the next couple of weeks. Chris will begin his project shortly thereafter.  He plans to clear trails, plant grass, install a bench and put in descriptive signs about the flora and fauna.  He will also attempt to clean the graffiti on the nearby bridge.  Joe will contact the DEP and coordinate.  It was suggested we contact the East Lyme Tymes to see if they would do picture coverage.
Two picnic tables have been set at the Butterfly Garden by the Parks and Recreation Department.  Dottie mentioned that the antique fire hydrant near where one of the benches was placed is unsightly.  It was suggested that in the fall several of the flowers in the Butterfly Garden could be split and put near this hydrant.
Still trying to figure out how to deal with the dreadful Pattagansett center island project.
Dan will discuss this with Wayne Fraser and ask him to send a letter to the State.
It was decided Val would wait until the fall to paint the legs on the sign at the berm in Flanders.  In the meantime she has replanted the Sara Fenick sign at the High School.  Weekly weeding is necessary.
Loretta has the Dick North sign looking very nice.
Joe has planted the gladiolas at the Town Hall.
The larger hanging baskets in the gazebo at the Town Green are working well and are splendid.
Maintenance is needed at the gardens around town.  Lynn, Dan and Kim will weed and perform upkeep on Hope Street.
A Beautification Committee Charge Account has been opened at Ring’s End.
The sign at the High School entrance needs “Beautification.”  Several suggestions, no solutions.

NEW BUSINESS
Dan received a telephone call from a City Manager in Louisiana inquiring about starting a Town Beautification Committee.  He requested any information we may have.  Dan suggested a copy of our By-laws.  We will check with the Secretary of the State of Connecticut to see if they may have a copy.
There was discussion about planting more daffodil bulbs in the fall.  No decision reached as to how many to order.
Val will call Jerry Mistretta about Class of 86 sign at the High School which is in need of repair.  We talked about sprucing up the area around the entrance to the high school with dogwood trees or maroon and white bushes.
The garbage cans at McCooks Park are unsightly.  Joe suggested an enclosure be made to hide them.  The Lions Club may be able to offer some assistance.  Also, it might be a job for the prisoners at the Gates Center to undertake.  We will check on the Internet for a price and information on same.  This will be a fall and winter project.  Joe will talk with Wayne Fraser.
A motion was made and was approved that we purchase two black barrels.  Those previously purchased were sold by Victor Stanley and were 36 gallons each.  At that time they were $1088.00/each.
Sam Peretz asked whether we would consider installing a light for the flagpole at McCooks Park.
The meeting adjourned at 8:35.  The next meeting will be held at the Town Hall on July 25th at 7:00 p.m.  Guests and new members are always welcome.

                                                                                                Respectfully submitted
