Commission on Aging Regular Meeting July 14, 2008

1. PRELIMINARY BUSINESS
Chairman Mountain called the Commission on Aging Regular Meeting of July 14, 2008 to order at 7:00 p.m.
a. Pledge of Allegiance. The Pledge of Allegiance was observed.
b. Delegations. There were no delegations.
c. Approval of Meeting Minutes – June 9, 2008. Mr. Mountain asked for additions, deletions or corrections to the Commission on Aging Regular Meeting Minutes of June 9, 2008.
The following corrections were noted: On page 2, under item b. (2) the Thimble Island and Clinton Crossing trips should be listed under Enrichment Trips. On page 3, under item 4. a., the next to the last sentence to be revised as follows: “She would also like a flat screen monitor to display upcoming events.”
MOTION: Mary Broga moved to accept the June 9, 2008 Commission on Aging Minutes, as amended. Seconded by Marge Caste. (6-0) Unanimous.
d. Correspondence. Correspondence was made available for review.
2. STATUS REPORT
a. Transportation. Cathy Wilson reported the vehicles will be inspected by a licensed dealer. Youth Services has agreed to provide a back up vehicle, if needed. Mrs. Hardy asked if there have been problems with the vehicles. Cathy Wilson replied the bus has 120,000 miles on it. She agreed to provide the Commission with a list of those in attendance, the cost of each trip and driver hours (with and without trips). Ilene Harris suggested sharing trips with neighboring towns. Ms. Wilson agreed to discuss this possibility with Waterford.
Ms. Hardy asked when the bus was purchased? She was informed it was purchased in 2000. She asked if leasing was considered. Ilene Harris felt leasing is expensive. Ms. Hardy added at the end of four years of the lease, the vehicle may be bought. She suggested studying it.
Ms. Janus asked if the Town inspects the vehicles? Ms. Wilson replied the Town normally takes care of maintenance.
b. Senior Trips.
(1) Enrichment Trips. The following Enrichment trips are planned: August 13 a cruise on the Connecticut River for a cost of $22.75; August 27 to Clams at Shore Road for a cost of $2.25.
(2) COA Sponsored Trips. The following COA sponsored trips are planned: August 14 to the Aqua Turf Banquet Facility in Plantsville, CT to see Bobby Vinton perform for a cost of $70.
(3) Day/Overnight Trips. The following Day/Overnight trips are planned: August 3 to Tanglewood to hear the Boston Symphony Orchestra featuring Yo Yo Ma. Lunch is included for a cost of $96; August 16 for an evening trip to Providence, RI to see WaterFire for a cost of $40; September 23 to the Garde to see Celtic Spring and to Foxwoods; September 27 for a trip to outlet stores and dinner in Kittery, Maine for a cost of $63; October 25 to Keane, New Hampshire for a Pumpkin Festival for a cost of $67; October 27 a trip to Aqua Turf in Plantsville, CT to see As Time Goes By. This trip includes dinner for a cost of $67.
September 9-11 for a Moose Safari and canoeing in Maine.
August 17-24 a Bermuda Cruise and November 9-19 a Panama Cruise.
December 8-10 Bucks County, Pennsylvania to visit the Shrine of St. Katharine Drexel, the home of Pearl Buck, and Longwood Gardens.
c. Programs.
(1) Senior Nutrition Program. Cathy Wilson reported because of rising gas prices, we now have a three day delivery system. Seventy-two hours notice is needed for reservations.
Delivery is made to the home bound Monday through Friday.
Volunteers have been informed they may receive gas reimbursement.
(2) Senior Center Programs-Ongoing. Ongoing programs are doing well.
(3) Senior Center Programs – New. Cathy Wilson reported a retirement series is being developed.
She is looking into offering a Zumba program.
Ms. Wilson would like to offer an evening AARP drivers course.
On August 22 a Fall Risk Assessment will be held. A grant has been received from Community Foundation and Pfizer for this program.
d. Budget. Ms. Wilson reported after transfers, the budget is fine.
e. Revenues. Cathy Wilson stated revenues are doing well.
3. OLD BUSINESS
a. Renovation of Senior Center Office. Cathy Wilson reported Mr. Formica has indicated that renovations will be done at the end of this year.
b. Job Description for New Position. Cathy Wilson and the Director of the Youth Center will prepare a job description.
c. Other Pertinent Business. There was no other pertinent business.
4. NEW BUSINESS
a. Review of Annual Attendance Statistics. In September, the Commission will receive a comparison of attendance for the last three years.
b. Review of Annual Revenues. In September, the Commission will receive a three year comparison of annual revenues.
c. Review of Annual Grant Transportation Stats. Ms. Wilson reported requests for transportation have increased.
d. Review of Use of Van by Lions Club. The Lions Club used the senior van for the Lobsterfest. The Commission on Aging Office has been reimbursed $211.45.
e. New Badge Requirement. Cathy Wilson reported Town employees are being photographed for badges.
f. Triad Info. Triad information has been included in each Commission member’s packet. A Committee will meet on July 24 at 1:30 p.m. to plan the Kick Off.
On November 7 at 1 p.m. the Kick Off session will be held. Attorney Blumenthal will be present.
g. Other Pertinent Business. There was no discussion of other pertinent business.
5. PUBLIC DISCUSSION
There was no public discussion.
6. ADJOURNMENT
MOTION: Ilene Harris moved to adjourn the July 14, 2008 Commission on Aging Regular Meeting at 7:40 p.m. Seconded by Marge Caste. (6-0) Unanimous.
