A permanent location for Care & Share’s food Pantry and Holiday Store is steadily becoming a reality as volunteers are busy preparing the space, which is in the Public Works building on Roxbury Road.
Professional contractors such as electricians, plumbers, and carpenters are donating their time and materials to renovate the interior and entrances, while local businesses and individuals have donated some goods. Dr. Kirk Engel of East Lyme Oral Surgery donated light fixtures and Smith’s Acres has donated plantings for landscaping near the pantry’s entrance.
The rooms have been painted and tile is being installed, but Care & Share president Angie McLean said there is still much to be done before the pantry can open in its new location. Some of the items needed include shelving, signage, chairs, and even window shades, as well as building materials such as nails, sheetrock and wall board. When it is time to move, helping hands will be needed to transport the pantry’s stock.
Care & Share’s lease in Midway Plaza is good until the end of November, but members of the organization are anxious to finally be in a fixed location. “The Roxbury Road building will definitely allow us to serve the community better,” said McLean. “It is a stable situation where we will also have space to house our Holiday Store.”
For information on how you can help with renovations, donations or moving the pantry, please call Care & Share’s main number, 860-739-8502 and leave a message for Angie McLean.
