GIS Program
A Geographic Information System (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. The Town has new and legacy data stored in a variety of formats in many locations. GIS can integrate and relate any data with a spatial component, regardless of the source of the data, so that we can analyze it as a whole and leverage it to make critical planning decisions.
GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. A GIS helps us answer questions and solve problems by looking at our data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared.
Planning Commissions, Planners and the public use the visualization, data management and spatial analysis tools of GIS to find promising sites for fast-growing businesses, route emergency vehicles, rebuild cities, and plan land use. GIS based planning allows us to quickly and efficiently create and test alternative development scenarios and determine their likely impacts on future land use patterns, transportation, natural resources, population and employment trends, thus allowing public officials to make informed planning decisions.
Municipalities today are leveraging technology and its many benefits to automate, streamline, and maximize service delivery. GIS is playing a key role in this government evolution. GIS networks are designed to connect all areas of its local government infrastructure, ensuring the best service possible for its constituents. The ultimate goal is to bring together all of the potential players to work collaboratively on a common vision for the community of East Lyme.

The GIS Economic Gardening Program now hosts a powerful set of tools that local businesses can use to help their small business grow and succeed.
