...how valuable this fundraiser is to local children who may not otherwise be able to attend summer camp. Children from ages six up to fourteen compete in the Triathlon by swimming, biking and running. “In the first year of the Mighty Kids Triathlon, 42 kids participated,” he said. “This past September, we had 250. After expenses are paid, all the money is divided fifty-fifty to Care & Share and the Aquatic Center’s scholarship fund.”

The funds support Care & Share’s campership program, which gives children in need the opportunity to attend the Aquatic Center’s Summer Sports School. The Aquatic Center sponsors another child for every one that Care & Share sponsors. In the eleven years since the inception of the triathlon, the event has helped approximately 120 children attend summer programs at the East Lyme Aquatic Center.

“We try to make sure no one is turned away from our programs,” said Stabach. “People don’t realize that our programs are independent from the high school, and we serve people from three month old babies to eighteen year olds. We do whatever we can to help kids get into our programs.”
