Diamond Dig Winner Happy and Generous
Pam Ward didn't even know that her son Liam had entered Care & Share's annual Diamond Dig fundraiser at Celebrate East Lyme Day on July 16. "I was very surprised when I got a call from a Care & Share representative, telling me, 'Liam has the diamond,'" she said.
Eight year old Liam Ward toured the booths on Main Street that day with a family friend while his mother tended a booth. He and his 10-year-old sister each paid a dollar for the chance to pull a packet out of a tub of sand. Each packet contained a diamond-like rhinestone, with one packet holding a real diamond donated by Northern Light Gems in Niantic.
Liam's motivation for entering the Diamond Dig was generosity, rather than hoping for a diamond. "He is always very generous and eager to give," said Pam. When asked what he intended for the diamond, he wanted to sell it to help pay the family's mortgage. "I told him he should put it aside and save it for later," she said.
The diamond may be small, but the funds that the Diamond Dig raises for Care & Share will make a substantial difference to local families in need-and it brought a lot of smiles to a boy who never expected to win.
