Report of Scam

Three residents of a 55+ community report that they were approached by a Caucasian male about 25years of age dressed up like a college student wearing clothing typical of this age group. One resident described the male as having bad teeth, wearing a ball cap and wearing shorts.

This male walks up to the front door ringing the door bell or knocks until it’s answered. Once contact with a occupant of the home is made the male provides a story indicating that he is a University student who has the opportunity to travel abroad this semester to complete his studies and in order to afford his travel expenses he is selling books. The book subscription is not ordinary because the books will be sent to hospitals and provided to cancer patients who cannot afford reading materials.

The male indicates that his business favors payment by credit card and frowns on checks. It has been revealed that once the male receives payment he adds either a numeral 1 or 2 in front of the usually double-digit price of the books, ie; cost of subscription is $38.00 male adds numbers to charge slip $138.00 or $238.00. This male doesn’t leave any receipts or transaction record behind.

If any other residents experience an incident such as this please try to gather any evidence to assist police in identifying this scam artist such as a name and physical description of the sales person or business identification credentials, vehicle description or registration info.  But most of all do not place yourself in harms way obtaining any information. Call the police to notify them that this person is in your community ASAP.
